German Mosques?
Since 1915. The first one was built for prisoners of war.
Today Germany has about 2600 Islamic places of worship, including around 150 formal mosques.
This one is the oldest still standing. The Berlin Mosque built in 1925.
Germany’s fledgling Muslim community was a target of Nazi discrimination.
After World War two, more Muslims came to Germany.
Thanks to guest worker agreement between West Germany and Turkey.
While east Germany was building its wall, West Germany was rebuilding its country.
900,000 Turks came to West Germany from 1961 to 1973.
Many of them stayed -along with their families.
Over half of all Muslims in Germany have Turkish roots.
That’s over 2.5 million people of Turkish descent.
More than a million Muslims are among the migrants who have arrived in Germany since 2015
But the majority of Germany’s Muslims are at least second, or the third generation…
The German government says.
There are close to five million Muslims.
Living in Germany
That’s about six percent of Germany’s 82.5 million people.
Not included in the government count are German Converts to Islam.
Germany’s Muslim are diverse with large Sunni, Alevi, and Shiite communities.
At least twenty percent identify culturally Muslim but are non-practicing
