I Believe the Hijab Gives Women More Safety

I love the hijab and I love wearing it. It makes me much more confident and makes me feel great. I love how steady gaze of people simply “bounces off” me and I feel like hijab gives me safety against them.

According to Rahyafte (the missionaries and converts website):

An Exclusive Interview of a Revert to Islam, Sarah, from Germany, by Bentolhoda Mofakhami

Please give us a biography of yourself.

My nickname is Sarah. My families religion is Catholic but no one in my family really practices and actually, nobody believes in god, it’s just on the paper that they are Christians. I am 20 and I live in Germany. I converted just 2 months ago.

How did you become familiar with Islam?

I became familiar with Islam in different ways. I worked in a hospital and we had  Arabic patients and I started to learn some Arabic basics to be able to talk to them and I fell in love with their heartiness. I don’t generalize that all Arabs are Muslims but those I was in contact with, are and so I got some information about Islam by them, s, for example, I got familiar with Ramadan. Even before, I didn’t know anything about Islam at all.

At university, I met a girl who had converted to Islam a few years ago and we got very good friends and until now she has been helping me to understand Islam and we help each other.

Also, I have some Muslim Friends from Arabic countries who were Muslim- born and I can ask them whenever I have questions about Islam.

What drove you to convert to Islam?

I guess, personal experiences throughout my life made me believe in “destiny”; until one day someone told me that what I had meant by “destiny” is actually God (Allah). And when I realized, we would changed thoughts this proses and I got convinced of the Islam to be the only and the real religion very fast so that I took the Shahada on the same day.

But I still don’t know much about the Islam except how to pray and some few “rules”, I simply believe in Allah and the prophet Mohammed and I am constantly in a learning process, Alhamdulillah.

What was your family’s reaction after you became a Muslim? Did you have any problem with people who knew you? Are you married?

I have not told my family so far, as I know, they won’t accept me as a Muslim – as they have no idea about Islam and just believe what the media says, which is mostly completely wrong- and I am sure they would feel ashamed of me in society as we don’t have any contact with any Muslims in our environment

No, I am not married yet but inshallah in future.

How do you see the spread of Islam in Germany?

I support the spread of Islam in Germany but I know that the minority think like me.

What is the most beautiful Ayah of the Quran in your opinion? And why?

As I just mentioned that I don’t know much about the Islam and the Qur’ān yet, I cannot answer this question. I read a book which kind of “translates” the Qur’an in my mother language but as I study at the moment and need to get ready for exam period which is coming up soon.

What’s your opinion about hijab? Has wearing hijab had any negative effects on your private life? Do you think it is only dedicated to women?

I love the hijab and I love wearing it. It makes me much more confident and makes me feel great. I love how steady gaze of people simply “bounces off” me and I feel like hijab gives me safety against them.

So far it didn’t have any negative effects on my private life, but as soon as I’d tell some specific people in my life, I can imagine that they’d probably end the relationship with me.

all of them start by staring at them and having bad thoughts. So I believe the hijab gives women more safety.

How do you analyze the family institution according to Christianity and Islam?

I believe that there is so much more love in Muslim families than in non-religious/other religious families.

What specifically attracted you to Islam?

I love how Muslims care about their environment for getting rewarded after death. Also, I love their generosity and how they care about each other.

What was your religion before converting to Islam?

Christianity.

What was your feeling when you prayed for the first time? Wasn’t it hard for you to pray 5 times a day?

Sometimes it’s hard for me to get up in the morning and when it’s a stressful day to take Wudu and concentrate on the praying during the praying. But I love the feeling afterward, I feel refreshed and close to Allah, I can talk to Allah and Allah gives me the energy and the support to handle whatever I want to achieve. The first time I joined a prayer, I felt very pleasant. It was so calming, kind of like meditation.

If you want to say some words about the beauty of Islam, the peace, the calmness you have found in this religion what do you say?

I am so thankful and feel endlessly grateful that Allah let me find him and I truly hope that more and more people will see the beauty and the truth of Islam and stop thinking negatively and with prejudices against Muslims but instead inform themselves about Islam. Inshallah, more people will accept Islam for themselves and Allah will guide them.

I hope I answered properly to all of your questions and could help!
