Quranic Strategy for Resolving Family Problems

From the view point of the Quran, a family court is a basic way for resolving problems between husband and wife.

According to rahyafte (the missionaries and converts website):This has been mentioned in Verse 35 of Surah An-Nisa, according to religious scholar Mohammad Ali Rezaei Esfahani, speaking in a session focusing on social interpretation of the Holy Quran. Following are excerpts from his remarks:

The verse says: “If there appears to be discord between a wife and her husband and if they desire reconciliation choose arbiters from the families of both sides. God will bring them together; God is All-knowing and All-aware.”

One point deduced from this verse is that family education by the father, mother and elderly members of the family should continue after marriage as well.

Some differences and disputes in family are minor but some of them that occur in economic, political, social, and other issues could undermine and threaten the foundations of the family.

The Holy Quran emphasizes that these differences should not be allowed to continue so much that they will result in divorce. In the very early stages, the couple should determine arbiters from the two sides in order to resolve the differences.

The verse also points out that when there are disputes between the husband and wife, the two sides’ parents and families should not get directly involved but should fairly choose arbiters. When arbiters are selected from family members, they do not reveal secrets nor do they seek money.

The overall spirit of this verse is promoting peace and reconciliation because friendship and kindness in family is a principle from the viewpoint of the Quran.

The verse also highlights the role of arbiters, who are different from judges in courts of law.
