Islamic Center in Milwaukee Holds Special Event to Celebrate Hijab

The Milwaukee Islamic Dawah Center hosted a Henna & Hijab event on Saturday, Feb. 3, to honor the headscarf worn by many Muslim women.

According to rahyafteha (the missionaries and converts website):The event featured a variety of hijabs, abayas, and other modest wear for sale or raffle, as well as henna artists who decorated the hands of the participants, Wisconsin Muslim Journal reported on Friday.

The organizers, Fardowsa Mohamed and Mako Shidad, said they wanted to celebrate the hijabas a symbol of worship, self-worth, and self-love, especially in a time when hijabis face discrimination and violence.

They said they were surprised by the turnout, which exceeded 50 people at any given time. The event lasted longer than expected, from 2 to 7 p.m., due to the enthusiasm of the attendees.

One of the highlights of the event was a hijab tutorial by Sister Hadja, an immigrant from Guinea, who showed different ways to wrap and tie the hijab.

The Milwaukee Islamic Dawah Center will host another hijab-themed event, Cover Girls: Journey and Struggle with Self-love, on Saturday, Feb. 17, at 2 p.m.
