The Holy Quran says: “When your Lord said to the angels: ‘I am placing on the earth a caliph,’ they replied: Will You put there who corrupts and sheds blood, when we exalt Your praises and sanctify You?’ He said: ‘I know what you do not know.’ He taught Adam (father of humans) the names all of them and then presented them to the angels, saying: ‘Tell Me the names of these, if you are truthful.’ ‘Exaltations to You,’ they replied, ‘we have no knowledge except that which You have taught us. You are indeed the Knowing, the Wise.’ Then He said to Adam: ‘Tell them their names.’ And when Adam had named them, He said: ‘Did I not tell you that I know the unseen of the heavens and earth, and all that you reveal and all that you hide!’” (Verses 30-33 of Surah Al-Baqarah)
In these verses, God tells us a brief part of the story of creation and what happened before Adam was sent to earth. According to these verses, God has created mankind for a special purpose and given him the required aptitudes and capabilities.
There are other points that one can learn from the story of creation of Adam. First, mankind has been chosen as God’s vicegerent on the earth and this necessitates that he should gain all the attributes that God has.
Before that, each angel would worship and glorify God with a special name and attribute. Each of them has a special task and is unaware of the others’ tasks and they have no knowledge except that given to them by God.
That is why the angels failed to recognize the meaning of mankind’s position and comprehensiveness. God taught man all names, that is, He taught man different secrets of the world and made him the teacher of angels.
Based on these verses, the angels had two things on their mind but told God one and did not tell Him the other. But God know both what they said and what they concealed.
What they said was that this vicegerent will spread corruption on earth while angels only worship God. What they concealed was an objection in the heart. They were unhappy that God had not chosen them as vicegerent. They were always engaged in worshipping and glorifying God. Yet, they were not chosen. It was mankind, with the aptitude of moving toward rebellion and corruption, who was selected to be God’s vicegerent.
God did not deny that mankind has the aptitude to move toward corruption but said that you (the angels) are not aware of all secrets of creation, and the angels agreed.
Mankind, whose heart is a comprehensive mirror reflecting divine Jamal (beauty) and Jalal (grandeur) and who has all the names and attributes of God before him, can move from aptitude to actuality and sit on the throne of God’s vicegerent.
God’s teaching of names to mankind is an unceasing process and has continued throughout history.
It is manifested in mankind advancing in science, knowledge and arts and uncovering secrets of creation one after another.
The grandeur and greatness of mankind’s ascension to the peak of knowing and dominating the nature is being more manifested day after day
