After completing her studies, Jemison earned her medical degree from Cornell University in 1981. She practiced as a general practitioner and worked with the Peace Corps in West Africa before realizing her childhood dream of becoming an astronaut.

In 1987, Mae Jemison was selected by NASA as one of 15 candidates out of a pool of over 2,000 applicants to participate in the Space Shuttle program. Her selection was historic, as it made her the first African American woman to be accepted into NASA’s astronaut training program.

On September 12, 1992, aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour, Jemison made history once again by becoming the first African American woman to travel in space. Her journey into orbit was a symbol of progress and a testament to human perseverance, opening doors for diversity and representation in the field of space exploration.

Mae Jemison’s achievements are not limited to her remarkable accomplishments in the field of science. She has also been an advocate for the intersection of faith and science. In 1985, Jemison joined the West African nation of Sierra Leone as a general practitioner.
