What Is First Religious Duty after Faith?

Faith in the Ghayb (the unseen) is the first characteristic of those who have Taqwa (God-fearing) and their second characteristic is establishing Salah, according to Surah Al-Baqarah.

According to rahyafte (the missionaries and converts website):“(The God-fearing) who believe in the unseen and establish the (daily) prayer; who spend out of what We have provided them.” (Verse 3 of Surah Al-Baqarah)

In the Quran and at the beginning of Surah Al-Baqarah, the first thing that is given special attention after belief in the unseen is saying prayers.

In Verse 37 of Surah An-Nur, God says that Salah has priority over business: “(Those) are men who exalt Him there, whom neither trade nor sale can divert from the remembrance of Allah, and establish the prayers, and pay the obligatory charity; fearing a Day when hearts and eyes shall be turned about.”

In this verse, God praises those who leave their financial interaction when they hear the sound of Adhan (call to prayers).

Especially on Friday, Muslims are advised to put trading to one side when the time of Friday prayers comes:

“Believers, on Friday when the call for prayer is made, try to attend prayer (remembering God) and leave off all business. This would be better for you if only you knew it. When the prayer ends, disperse through the land and seek the favor of God. Remember Him often so that perhaps you will have everlasting happiness.” (Verse 9-10 of Surah Al-Jumu’a)

The then president of Iran who was martyred in 1981, Mohammad Ali Rajaei, would say: “Don’t tell Salah that you have some work to do, tell your work that you Salah.”
