UN Condemns Attacks on Sacred Scriptures in Unanimous Resolution

The UN General Assmebly adopted a resolution, deploring attacks on religious symbols amid a new wave of acts of Quran desecration in Sweden and Denmark.

According to rahyafte (the missionaries and converts website):In a move to protect the sanctity of religious scriptures and symbols, the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution on Tuesday that strongly deplores any acts of violence or desecration against holy books as a violation of international law and human rights.

The resolution, drafted by Morocco, comes in response to a series of incidents in European countries where Qurans were burned, torn or defaced by anti-Muslim groups or individuals, sparking outrage and protests among Muslims around the world.

The resolution adopted by the 193-member General Assembly ”strongly deplored all acts of violence against persons on the basis of their religion or belief, as well as any such acts directed against their religious symbols, holy books, homes, businesses, properties, schools, cultural centers or places of worship, as well as all attacks on and in religious places, sites and shrines in violation of international law.”

It also urged states to take effective measures to prevent and combat such acts and to ensure accountability and justice for the victims.

The resolution echoed a similar one passed by the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on July 12, which also denounced the attacks on the Quran and called them ”acts of religious hatred.” However, that resolution faced opposition from some Western countries that voted against it or abstained, citing concerns over freedom of expression and opinion.

The UN resolutions reflect the growing recognition of the need to respect and protect the diversity of religions and beliefs in a world where intolerance and extremism are on the rise.
