Moses Used Supplications on Path of Prophethood

Throughout history, since the first prophet of God set foot on earth, no one has been able to educate people at the individual and social levels better than prophets and Imams (AS) have.

According to rahyafte (the missionaries and converts website):So it is important to study the educational methods they used. One of these methods is using supplications.

Supplication is a humble request from God, who has absolutely no need.

Supplication and prayers exists in different forms in all nations and religions.

The most important point about supplication is that it is a declaration of need and dependence on God, the Almighty.

Moreover, God, Himself, has commanded humans to pray and recite supplications.

Moses (AS), who was a great messenger of God, used the method of supplication in guiding people. Here are two points about his supplications:

1- Politeness in supplication

Moses (AS) decided to go to Midian, which was outside the territory ruled by pharaoh. After a long trip, he arrived in Midian and saw the daughters of Prophet Shuaib (AS) there. He drew water from the well for the girls and watered their flock. Hungry and tired, he lay down under the shade of a tree and prayed: “Moses watered their flocks and then sought shelter under a shadow praying, ‘Lord, I need the means to preserve (the power) that You have granted me.’” (Verse 24 of Surah Al-Qasas)

Although he was tired and hungry, knew no one in that city and had no refuge, he did not act impatiently but just talked about what he needed and waited for God’s favor.

2- Supplication before embarking on mission

When Moses (AS) learned about the significance of his mission, he prayed to God and requested a few things in order to be able to fulfill his mission well.

One of the things he requested was “expansion of breast”.

“He said: ‘O my Lord! Expand my breast for me’”. (Verse 25 of Surah Taha)

By asking for expansion of his breast, he was asking God to fill his heart with the courage that may enable him to perform the obligations connected with the great mission of a messenger, and give him tolerance, steadfastness and forbearance.

So one can learn lessons from these two points in the supplications of Moses (AS).

First, it is important that one should ask God for the things he wants humbly and should not act as if God owes something to him.

Another point is that one should know that before embarking on any mission, he should prepare mentally and spiritually and get to the highest level of readiness for that task, including by praying to God to give him that level of preparedness.
