A Weighty Word in A Noble Book

Since the dawn of history, billions of remarks have been made by prominent thinkers, scholars and orators but it is the word of the Quran that has features that God describes as “A Weighty Word”.

According to rahyafte (the missionaries and converts website):God says in Verse 5 of Surah Al-Mazzammil: “We are about to cast upon you a weighty Word.”

Allameh Tabatabaei, in his Al-Mizan Exegesis of the Quran, says the word ‘weighty’ may have different aspects:

1- Weighty from spiritual point of view: The Quran is a weighty word in that it has teachings that not all people can comprehend. Only those who not only do not commit sins, but do not even think of committing sins, can understand the teachings. According to the Quran, the Infallible Imams (AS) are pure from any sins: “People of the House, God wants to remove all kinds of uncleanliness from you and to purify you thoroughly.” (Verse 33 of Surah Al-Ahzab)

Sometimes this weightiness was seen in the face and gestures of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and the companions noticed it. Imam Ali (AS) says that when Surah Al-Ma’idah was revealed to the Holy Prophet (PBUH), he was riding a camel. The revelation was so weighty that the camel could not bear the phenomenon of unusual weight.

2- The heavy weight of implementing ideological and ethical teachings. Allameh Tabatabaei refers to Verse 21 of Surah Al-Hashr to highlight the weight of this aspect of the Quran: “Had We sent down this Quran upon a mountain, you would have seen it humble itself and split asunder for fear of Allah. Such are the parables we strike for people so that they will reflect.”

This verse points to the fact that there is no shortage in the Quran in terms of guidance and if some people are not guided, it is because of their own weaknesses.

3- Weight of implementing the Quran in society and inviting people: This weight is seen in the fact that the Holy Prophet (PBUH) was harassed and hurt by disbelievers and polytheists. For example, the Prophet (PBUH), along with his followers, went through many difficulties and hardships for three years in the Shi’b Abi Talib. In this period, the wealth of HAzrat Khadijah (SA) was fully spent, the Prophet (PBUH) and his followers could not do any business and buy or sells anything to anyone.

The Prophet (PBUH) said: “No prophet was ever made to suffer such afflictions as I was”
