Asking for Patience against God’s Decrees

In the supplication dedicated to day 13 of Ramadan, we ask God to bestow patience on us. This patience, of course, means resilience and resistance, not toleration of miseries.

According to Rahyafte(the missionaries and converts website):In the supplication of this day, we read: “O Allah, on this day, purify me from uncleanliness and dirt, make me patient over events that are decreed, grant me the ability to be pious, and keep company with the good, by Your help, O the beloved of the destitute.”

The blessed month of Ramadan is a period for individuals to clean themselves of dirt and sins that block their way to Allah.

A new gate of cleanness opens towards people as we ask God to cleanse us like what He did to Ahl al-Bayt: “O family of the House, Allah only wishes to distance fault from you, and to cleanse you, and to purify you abundantly.” (Surah al-Ahzab, verse 33)

Patience on God’s decrees

Patience is one of the prominent traits stressed by the Holy Quran and religious leaders. This patience equals resilience and resistance and does not mean toleration of miseries and inaction.

We shall test you with something of fear and hunger, and decrease of goods, life and fruits. Give glad tidings to the patient, who, in adversity say: ‘We belong to Allah and to Him we shall return. ‘ On those will be prayers and mercy from their Lord, those are guided.

One of the most beautiful types of patience is the one exercised against God’s will. This patience is accompanied not by force but by consent.

Keeping company with good people

Just like our bodies, our spirits also need protection, growth, and perfection. One of the most significant features of Islam is that it pushes aside so-called privileges such as wealth, race, blood, etc. Verse 14 of Al-Hujurat reads: “People, We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes that you might know one another. The noblest of you before Allah is the most righteous of you. Allah is the Knower, the Aware.”
