Four Reasons Why Some People Ignore Religion

Some people have become pessimistic about religion in the contemporary era. There are reasons behind this ignoring of religion which relate to social factors, not to the essence of the religion.

According to Rahyafte (the missionaries and converts website):Four of the main reasons have been mentioned below:

1) Lack of understanding of religion

The more we have knowledge of something, the more we acknowledge its importance and features. The root of negligence toward religion can be traced back to a lack of understanding it in an appropriate manner. Imam Reza (AS) once said: “People will follow us if they understand the beauties of our remarks.”

Some people may ask whether God is in need of our acts of worship. These people should know that God Almighty by no means is in need of our prayers and ourselves, and even, the universe does not need us either. Does earth, bees, other animals, the sun, etc. need us? When we build our house in a way that it can gain sunlight, it does not mean that the sun requires humans, rather, it is humans that need the sun and its warmth.

Being aware of the effects of good and bad deeds, humans will certainly go for the good ones and refrain from others.

Attracting people towards religion requires increasing awareness about religious thoughts in society and boosting ties between Muslim clerics and the new generation.

2) Added superstitions

Some people ignore religion because they see some involving superstitions which have been mixed into the religion by ignorant friends or wise enemies.

A thirsty individual will not drink a glass of fresh water if he sees a dead insect inside. There are many such thirsty people who opt to ignore religion because of seeing superstitions. Therefore, we should not neglect the acts of some Muslims that affect the views of others towards Islam.

3) Misinterpretation of religion

Sometimes, religion and its teachings are interpreted wrongly and this wrong understanding is attributed to the religion by others. Those believing in this wrong belief also believe that other faithful people should do the same.

4) Deeds of some believers

The deeds and behaviors of some believers also sometimes have bad effects on others. This is like when someone with dirty clothes and body distributes clean food for the hungry. For sure, people will raise doubts about the cleanliness of the food after seeing this status.
