Shia Leader Assassinated in Tajikistan

Mamadbokir Mamadbokirov, the leader of Shia Muslims in Tajikistan, was assassinated by unknown gunmen.

According to Rahyafte(the missionaries and converts website  Eurasianet news website cited local sources as saying that he was assassinated in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region.

They said he was killed by sniper fire on Sunday, May 22.

Some sources say the influential local leader who was the target of a major security sweep over several months has been shot dead by government troops.

The Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region has been in a state of turmoil since May 18, when the government declared it was launching what it termed an “anti-terror operation”.

The region has been the scene of tensions since the end of the five-year civil war in Tajikistan.

Tajikistan declared its independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union in September 1991 and plunged into a civil war in May 1992.

Tajikistan is a Muslim-majority country in Central Asia. The majority of its Muslims adhere to the Sunni branch of Islam, and a smaller group are Shia Muslim.
