Muslim Families Attend Ramadan Festivities in Michigan

To celebrate the holy month of Ramadan, the city of Dearborn and the West Dearborn Downtown Development Authority are teaming up to host Ramadan festivities this year.

According to Rahyafte(the missionaries and converts website):“Ramadan Nights in West Downtown Dearborn” will be a fun and safe family-friendly event for residents and visitors, WDET reported.

Held every week during Ramadan, the 2023 Ramadan season activities includes food trucks, family-friendly games, and informational tents all along West Village Drive between Mason and Monroe Streets.

“We saw the Holy Month of Ramadan as a really great catalytic opportunity to not only celebrate a holiday that’s important to our community, but also to celebrate our downtown and getting out and enjoying it,” says Jordan Twardy, the economic development director for the City of Dearborn.

Participating trucks include Mr. Bowls, El Sayed Meats on the Go, Bakri Coffee Roasters and more.

“A big part of that is getting people to mingle across the city, east to west, west to east, north to south and vice versa. That is something we are really pushing as a whole team and as an administration, and this is just an outcropping of that,” says Twardy.

Ramadan is the holiest month in Islamic calendar when Muslims fast from dawn to sunset.

Muslims dedicate their time during the holy month to become closer to Allah through prayer, self-restraint and good deeds.

Dearborn is the seventh most-populated city in Michigan. It is home to the largest Muslim population in the United States per capita. It also is home to the largest mosque in the United States.

Because of waves of immigration from the Middle East in the late 20th century, the largest ethnic grouping is now composed of descendants of various nationalities of that area: Muslims and Christians from Lebanon and Palestine, as well as immigrants from Syria, Iraq, and Yemen.
