Luqman’s Fatherly Advice for Son

Luqman was a scholar who lived during the time of Prophet Davoud (David) and was known for his great knowledge, Hikma (wisdom) and his moral advice to his son.

According to Rahyafte(the missionaries and converts website):There are different view about his character. Some say he was a great scholar and moral figure. Some others believe he was a prophet of God. According to some others, he was a slave who reached a sublime spiritual status given his good moral attributes and his master therefore freed him.

There are also different opinions about his race and where he lived. Some believe he was from the people of Aad, while others say he was from Bani Isra’il. There are others who say he was a slave from Abyssinia (today’s Ethiopia).

Luqman was a character who helped Prophet Davoud (AS) in judicial issues.

Among his characteristics were humbleness before people, never moving toward polytheism, walking slowly, moderation in life, deep thinking, silence, honesty, truthfulness and helping to resolve people’s disputes.

There is a Surah in the Holy Quran named Luqman which mentions ten pieces of his advice to his son. They include the need for patience in times of hardship, saying prayers, promoting virtue and preventing vice, and having moderation in life.

His pieces of advice have also been mentioned in religious books. He, for example, urged his son to help people, always smile, be generous, accept others’ invitations, and give consultation to his friends.

Luqman believed that a good companion is someone who always remembers God. The actions of such a person benefit his companions and bring about divine mercy.

He also believed that even one thousand friends are not enough while an enemy is one too many.

Luqman was an ordinary human being who had great intelligence and mental capacities. It has been narrated that one of his friends asked him how he grained so much knowledge and he responded that it was God’s blessing and was granted to him for his characteristics such as honesty, truthfulness and silence when there was no benefit in talking.
