Rights of Wealth as Depicted by Imam Sajjad

Divine tests have various forms and wealth is one of the means for testing humans. There are numerous recommendations in the Quran and Islamic resources about how to acquire and spend wealth.

According to Rahyafte (the missionaries and converts website):Imam Sajjad (AS), the fourth Shia Imam, has a work titled “Treatise on Rights” (Risalat Al-Huquq) in which he names various kinds of rights.

One part of this work points to the right of wealth:

“The right of your property (mal) is that you take it only from what is lawful and you spend it only in what is proper. Through it you should not prefer above yourself those who will not praise you. You should act with it in obedience to your Lord and not be miserly with it, lest you fall back into regret and remorse while suffering the ill consequence. And there is no strength save in God.

According to Imam Sajjad (AS), the right of wealth is that it be gained from a halal source and be spent on appropriate measures.

This is so important that if somebody says in their will that part of their wealth should be spent on orphans, their children cannot use this money for other good deeds, such as the marriage of the youths for instance.

Another recommendation is that you should not hand your wealth to someone who does not like the way you gain halal money because they may use this wealth on things that are not divine.

The fourth Shia Imam also has a recommendation for those who have managed to attain wealth but failed to spend it on the path of God. Their children will instead spend this on good deeds and they will regret why they did not do it themselves.

There are various Quranic verses that say having wealth is a test and that humans should be aware of how they are gaining and spending it.
