Khawf and Raja; Two Wings of Balance for Mankind

Mankind needs to know the path and have a balance whatever he wants to do. This includes moving on the path to salvation. On that path, what helps man find the required balance is Khawf (fear) and Raja (hope) in God.

According to Rahyafte (the missionaries and converts website):Khawf and Raja is a term in the Quran and denotes simultaneous fear and hope and creates a kind of balance in man’s life. So one should have both Khawf and Raja at the same time.

Khawf means fear that originates in awareness. One knows what sin he has committed and knows that God is just and will uphold justice. So he will be ashamed before God and before his own conscience. This will create a kind of deterrence against sins.

Imam Sadiq (AS) said: “A believer is always between two fears. One is the fear of his past sins, (so) he does not know as to how Allah would deal with him. Secondly he fears until the end of his life and does not know the sins that might be committed by him, causing his destruction. The believer does not forgo his fear for his whole life, and his affairs do not improve without fear.”

Raja means hope. One knows that for all his sins and wrongdoings, if he repents, God will accept his repentance. This hope, too, create deterrence against sins, whereas for one who has no hope, being good or bad makes no difference and that paves the way for more sins.

Hope in God sets the ground for growth and moving toward perfection because one is aware that a superior power is supporting him.

Khawf and Raja are two wings for one’s growth and moving toward perfection. Just as a bird should have two wings to have balance and be able to fly, a believer can move on the divine path if there is a balance between the two wings of Khawf and Raja.

The outcome of having Khawf and Raja is returning to the path of God, because with these two, there is no other way than repentance, which turns sins into good deeds.

“But only those who repent and believe and act righteously will have their sins replaced by virtue; God is All-forgiving and All-merciful.” (Surah Al-Furqan, Verse 70)
