Mother of Mary’s Vow

Issa (Jesus) was raised by a woman who is known for her piety and greatness all over the world.

According to Rahyafte(the missionaries and converts website)But this woman herself was raised by another woman who is little known in history.

The Holy Quran has shortly introduced this mother in verse 35 of Surah Al Imran: “Remember when Imran’s wife prayed to her Lord saying, ‘I have made a vow to dedicate to Your service whatever is in my womb. Lord, accept it from me. You are All-hearing and All-knowing’.”

The mother of Mary (SA) is looking for a way to fulfil her duty to God regarding the child in her womb in the best way possible.

She says “I have made a vow to dedicate (my child) to Your service’. That is to say, she has made (Mary) free from the duties she has to her mother so that she can fully serve God.

The child is born after some time but, contrary to what the mother expected, it is a girl. So the mother cannot act upon the vow she has made to God. But it is so important that she makes efforts so that the vow would be fulfilled in the next generation: She raises her daughter in a way that she can raise her son to serve God.

The mother of Mary (SA) knew that the society at that time needed someone who could help humanity grow, a person like Jesus (AS).

That is why God says in verse 36 of Surah Al Imran: “When the baby was born she said, ‘Lord, it is a female.’ God knew this. Male and female are not alike. ‘I have named her Mary. I pray that You will keep her and her offspring safe from Satan, the condemned one.’”

Since the mother’s aim is to raise a child who can be the mother of someone who will serve God, as she has vowed, she names her Mary. Mary means chaste and virtuous and is similar in meaning to Fatima in Arabic. She names her Mary so that she can raise her to become a pure and virtuous woman.

The special duty that God has given women is raising the next generation. A mother is the one who can build the future and the humans of the future and in order to do that, she needs to be virtuous and pure.
