According to rahyafte(the missionaries and converts website) French academic Yahya Bonaud served greatly to Islamic philosophy and mysticism. He was a member of The Ahlul Bayt World Assembly and for years spread teachings of the Holy Quran and the Ahlul Bayt worldwide. Bonaud also published a translation of the Holy Quran, a newer version to the text translated by late French theologian Henry Corbin.
Born as Christian Bonaud in 1957 to a French-German Catholic family in Freiburg, Bonaud embraced Islam in 1979 at the age of 22 following the Iranian Islamic Revolution and changed his surname to Alawi. Yahya Bonaud who was under influence of the founder of Iran’s Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini began studying Arabic Language and Literature as well as Islamic Studies and got familiar with what Henry Corbin introduced as Shia mysticism to the world. Bonaud received his PhD in 1995 from Sorbonne University, his thesis titled “Theology in Philosophical and Mystic Works of Imam Khomeini”. He traveled to the Iranian cities of Qom and Mashhad and studied for years at the seminaries. His teachers were Grand Ayatollah Abdullah Javadi-Amoli and late Shia scholar Seyyed Jalal al-Din Ashtiyani. Bonaud who lived several years in Mashhad, went on a religious mission to the West African country of Ivory Coast (Cote d’Ivore) in recent years to spread Shia teachings there.
He passed away during a sea incident on August 25, 2019. His body will be transferred to the holy city of Mashhad, where he will be buried at the shrine of 8th Shia Imam, Ali ibn Musa al-Riza.
