Interviewer: Assalamu`alaikum.

Sister Pamela: Wa`alaikum assalam.

Interviewer: What’s your name sister?

Sister Pamela: My name is Pamela Kara.

Interviewer: Sister Pam, where are you from?

Sister Pamela: I’m originally from outside Cleveland, Ohio in the northern part of the US near the Great Lakes. This is where I grew up.

Interviewer: Masha’Allah, and how long have you been Muslim?

Sister Pamela: Well, I’ve been Muslim for about 12 years.

Interviewer: What religion did you have before becoming Muslim?

Sister Pamela: I was raised in a primarily Protestant family.

Interviewer: What made you to know Islam?

Sister Pamela: Actually I think I was always looking for the truth for my whole life. I was looking for something. I didn’t really know what I was looking for but when I became older I married, and I was preparing to adopt a child who was going to be from oversees, from a Muslim country. I’d been married for 16 years and I was so Christian. My husband was a Muslim and I was a Christian. I didn’t even become interested in finding anything out about Islam until we were starting to prepare to take this child inour home.

I started taking classes at the local Masjid thinking I’m going to become a mom and I need to prepare and get some idea of what I’m going to be teaching this child. So this is how I first became interested in Islam.

Interviewer: Subhanallah and you are doing a good job also in raising a child, is he an orphan also?

Sister Pamela: Yes, he was an orphan also

Interviewer: So you are going to get more reward from Allah also

Sister Pamela: Insha’Allah

Interviewer: So from your studies you became convinced about Islam. Let me ask you a more specific question like what’s the thing that made you really to look into Islam and what was the thing that really impressed you about it?

After just reading Surat al-Fatiha I knew that this what I was looking for.
Sister Pamela: Well actually I started to go to the local Masjid where I had classes. And I remember arguing with the Imam and telling him he didn’t really know what he was talking about. I was still very much … I wasn’t really attached to anything, but I just realy didn’t believe quite what he was saying. So one of the gentlemen in the class asked me if I have a Quran, and I said “No I didn’t”, and he gave me a copy of the Quran. I read Surat al-Fatiha, and that was enough. Just reading the surah, I felt as if a little voice was saying “This is what you are looking for. This is the Truth”. After just reading Surat al-Fatiha I knew that this what I was looking for.

Interviewer: Wow, that’s great masha’Allah, and now that you made your shahadah how do you see your life after Islam? Do you see much of difference in your life before and after you embraced Islam?

Sister Pamela: It’s not the same life and I’m not the same person. I cannot imagine not being a Muslim and not having Islam and not having the Quran and the Sunnah. It’s like taking a new pair of glasses and putting them on and seeing the world in the correct way. Because my life prior to that was very much a life of confusion. Being raised as an American, really without any truth in our culture or foundation, it was like you are just confused, and you are searching going from one situation to the next without any plan or anywhere to go.

So once I took my shahadah and became a Muslim and then learning more about Islam, and learning to pray, I knew that there’s no going back there’s only going forward, so this is the very best thing I ever did in my life.

Interviewer: Subhanallah, so you don’t regret what you are doing right now?

Sister Pamela: If it’s the only thing I did in my life it would still be the best thing I did in my life. I don’t absolutely regret it.

Interviewer: Subhanallah, I want to ask you about your family and your friends, how did they react after they knew that you became Muslim?

Sister Pamela: Well, they were not particularly happy about it, but they were not necessarily too confrontational, except I have several family members who don’t speak to me, which is really no loss if they don’t want to speak to me. But Hijab was a big deal for my family. But subhanallah every thing worked out and over time when you are patient with people they accept or at least allow you to be yourself and practice your religion. After a while it was OK. I have very good parents.

Interviewer: Now before I go the last question I have something for you. We did an earlier interview with sister Katia, the Russian girl, of course you met her after you became Muslim. So this is part of your dawah now like you are following up with new Muslims. Would you tell us a little bit about how do you see other girls that are becoming Muslim? When we were interviewing Katia I felt that she was talking about you as a big mom for her and she was like a very close friend to you. Would you like to tell us a little bit about your dawah also?

Sister Pamela: Well everything you do when you go out is dawah. How you present yourself, how you speak to people. If you see people like I met Katia, she was at the Masjid trying to get some information about Islam. You simply extend yourself. You show people, especially women, that this is the right way. I never had respect for myself until I became a Muslim and wore a hijab. Because I’m free. I’m free from what the world tells you what you need to be. So Katia is masha’Allah very beautiful and nice girl and she was also searching for the same thing.

Interviewer: Alhamdulellah. The last thing I would like to ask you is what message do you give to the world?

Sister Pamela: I would ask the world, everyone in it, please if you buy one copy of Quran and just read the Quran, and study it and search for yourself. By doing that perhaps your heart will open because Allah calls for hearts of all of His creations, and He will open your heart, and He will allow you to see the truth and insha’Allah lead a very good life.

Because this life is just a moment, and insha’Allah the next is what we are working for.
