On The cold evening of December 14, 2017, I supposed to have an interview with one of the Zaria massacre martyr’s daughter. Although her father was martyred brutally by Nigerian Army for his faith, she was so determined, seemed like mountains and talking directly and bravely about Zaria massacre which surprised me.
After the interview, I noticed that high dignity and honor have stuck to her father’s name forever.
Dear, sister! First of all please introduce yourself!
My name is Fatima Mohammad Turi. The daughter of martyr Sheikh Muhammad Mahmud Turi, the former assistant of Sheikh Zakzaky (Hafizahullah).
When and where has your father been martyred?
That all happened, Two years ago in December 2014, when our leader, mentor and Father Sayyid Zakzaky (Hafizahullah) was unjustly attacked and incarcerated.
Among the hundreds of brothers killed in Shaikh Zakzaky’s residence, was my own father, Sheikh Muhammad Mahmoud Turi. He was among the very loyal and faithful brothers that stood still to the end. Eyewitnesses told us how he was very supportive and motivate to the other brothers and sisters there, with his apt words and actions. Some of his words reportedly were;
“The soldiers are here to kill Sayyid Zakzaky (Hafizahullah) and we will not allow them to achieve that until we are all killed first”
“This is a day to keep our promises as loyal followers of Sayyid Zakzaky (Hafizahullah), so it’s not the time for crying, we should face the soldiers, prevent them from killing our beloved Shaikh until we all attain martyrdom. A hadith of Rasoul (SAWA) said; anything that happened to a believer is a blessing.”
It was also revealed that some of the brothers were actually holding him, not wanting to see him get killed by the soldiers, but he asked them to leave him alone and later he was shot several times on his chest until he achieved martyrdom.
What about your other family members?
My dad is the only person was martyred but my sister’s wife was also in prison.
How did Soldiers attack on the Hussainiyyah? And who was there? And what happened there?
The soldiers that were sent to attack the Islamic movement, started with the Hussainiyyah a center of unity where even Sunni member soften attended some programs being organized by the Islamic Movement. They threw grenades and RPGs at both the Hussainiyyah, as well as the residential compounds of Shaikh Zakzaky (H). They shot and killed indiscriminately about 1000 of unarmed civilians among which are the old, women and children, including babies.
What happened to Sheikh Zakzaky’s family when the soldier got there?
We could recall how 3 more children of Shaikh Zakzaky (H) were brutally shot down at his residence, making a total of 6 of his nine children to have all been murdered by the Nigerian army, before his own eyes.
The inhumane brutality of the soldiers did not stop there, as they also killed the Shaikh’s nephew, burnt his 70 years old sister alive, shot the Shaikh himself up to7 times, shot his wife 4 times and burnt down the residence along with all the people inside, with some even burnt alive.
Do you know any eyewitness to Zaria Massacre?
One of my sisters was a witness. She went to Sheikh Zakzaky (Hafizahullah) resident to get out her husband, she witnesses that her husband was shot several times. Then he was kept in the prison. But after a while they released him because of his bad health condition.
Did your sister’s wife meet Sheikh Zakzaky (Hafizahullah) in the prison?
No. He was in another prison, not in the same prison with Sheikh Zakzaky (Hafizahullah).
Because he was held in Kaduna Prison but Sheikh Zakzaky (Hafizahullah) was held in Abuja Prison.
Do you have any non-Muslim members in your Islamic Movement in Nigeria? (Like Christians) Do you have any conflict with Christians?
Yes, we do. As you know Nigeria is a wide country with different religions and because Sheikh Zakzaky (Hafizahullah) advises all to the unity, some Sunnis and Christians join the Islamic Movement in Nigeria.
We don’t have any conflict with Christians. We live in peace with our Christians and after the government’s crackdown against the Islamic Movement, Christians supported us because they understood that Sheikh Zakzaky (H) calls just for unity.
Why do non-Muslim like Christian and Sunni brothers and sisters join the Islamic Movement in Nigeria? Is a political strategy?
The Islamic Movement in Nigeria is not political.
As I mentioned we have members from different religions.
But this members always are trying to find the truth. If the officials do something wrong, they criticize the officials, and they say “This is not right, you should not do this, and you should be good to the people!”
What was your common programs with the members from other religions?
We performed some programs like creating some charities and foundation, we commemorate different activities regarding to the Ahle Bayt (AS), and also about Palestinians and Quds Day (International Quds Day).
Why are all Nigerian officials’ reactions in a brutal manner?
It’s the history of human being. Nigerian officials have come to a wrong conclusion.
They think that if they take action violently and kill some people ruthlessly, other would be afraid, more silent, more patient, and also would obey them in any worse conditions and would not show any opposition to their unjust attitude.
That’s why! Because they before warned Sheikh Zakzaky (H) by putting him in the prisons for several years, in order to stop this Islamic Movement. But his non-stoppable movement continued.So officials thought if they killed his kids and sons, and all of his followers, the Islamic Movement in Nigeria would be vanished.
So what is Nigerian Army’s main goal to kidnap Sheikh Zakzaky and attack a holy place like Baghiatallah Hoseinieh?
Sheikh Zakzaky (H) never support the cruel and arrogant governments. So they decided to eliminate the Islamic Movement by killing its leader.
Have their violent actions been effective on the Muslim community in Nigeria?
What’s your opinion?
They cannot kill and eliminate an ideology, by killing everybody. Because an ideology is a practice in minds. So they will achieve nothing by killing people.
Please update us about Sheikh Zakzaky’s and his wife’s last conditions?
They’re in a really bad condition and really need immediate attention now.
Because Sheikh Zakzaky (H) and his wife were shot several times in their bodies, even Sheikh Zakzaky was shot in his eyes that caused to lost one of his eyes, and his wife was shot 4 times in her body, even she was shot in her stomach. The more time is passing, their conditions become worse because they are not given any medical treatments by Nigerian officials.
Do you think there are some similarities between the way Nigerian officials face with Sheikh Zakzaky and the way Bahraini regime treated Ayatollah Sheikh Isa Ahmed Qassim or the way Saudi Regime treated Sheikh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr?
Yes there are some similarities. All of these regimes are afraid of approaching revolutions ,or any challenges .These three leaders, Sheikh Zakzaky (H) ,Ayatollah Sheikh Isa Ahmed Qassim, and martyr Sheikh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr are in the same track, they all support real Islamic movements in Palestine, Yemen ,Bahrain. That’s the track of justice. They are all the son of the same school of thought, Imam Khomeini’s school of thought.
There is some dreadful news about women, like violently arresting them, horribly torturing them, cruelly separating the arrested mothers from their children in the prison, and also about seeing much more crackdown on veiled women, do you confirm this news?
Definitely,y they are all true. Women, as a big part of the Shiite society, are those who they hope to be scared by their crackdowns, but as I told you this kind of violent actions against women isn’t effective.
What is the role of Israel in Zaria massacre?
We saw a crackdown on Sheikh Zakzaky (H) and his three kids in December 2014, which was during Quds Demonstration, on the support of Palestine and against Israel. As we know, Surely Israel will not be happy when a large African people come out and criticize Israel, because they think, maybe Nigeria finally become a country like Iran, united against Israel.
The government refused to conduct an impartial investigation on this genocide because the Nigerian president under pressure from Israel, the USA, Saudi Arabia and their allies, actually ordered this inhuman massacre. The Zaria genocide was therefore a planned agenda that was merely and shamelessly executed by the Nigerian Government.
Do you still see increasing crackdowns on the Islamic Movement in Nigeria?
We have a lots of problems in any action that we want to do.
The last crackdown was on the last Arbaeen, commemoration of Imam Hussein (AS).
Officials killed a lot of people among them some undergraduates, two of them was shot in head.
Please tell us more about the mass grave! What made them dig a mass grave?
They dug the mass grave to burry all corpses and hide all the evidence.
They even buried some of them alive.
Some officials in Judicial Commission of Inquiry confessed on the existence of a mass grave but we now that the number of buried people is more than what they confessed, because we know more than 1000 of people are still missing.
What’s your message for those who see this interview? (You can talk to them directly.)
It is known to Muslims that Allah (SWT) in his glorious book-Al’Qur’anul Kareem says “And do not speak of those who are slain in Allah’s way as dead, nay (they are) alive, but you do not perceive.”
We believe that many people who are away from our sight and they have sacrificed their lives for Allah’s sake are actually alive in Allah’s sight.
I want just to thank all Muslims worldwide for their support and also want them to continue their support.
I ask them to pray for us and our leader, Sheikh Zakzaky (H).
I would like to conclude with a popular saying of our revered Shaikh Zakzaky (H) which goes: “The more you touch us, the stronger we are”.
May Allah (SWT) hasten the release of our leader, his wife and all of our brothers and sisters in detention.
